Merch Collab By Amazon

What’s great about Merch Collab is that it allows you to sell what would traditionally be flagged as a Copyright violation. It changes everything. If you want to know how, watch the video or read on below.

If you’re a T-shirt seller on Amazon just like me, you have to be extremely careful in making your designs. Copyright law is something that Amazon takes very seriously and pays great attention to.  Amazon is quick to take down uploaded designs which violate copyright laws. They also go the extra mile in ensuring that you would not be able to sell such a design in the marketplace in the future. A copyright violation can lead to a suit which could involve heavy financial repercussions for settlement, if found guilty.

What is Merch Collab?

Merch Collab by Amazon is a licensing program which gives brands, qualified designers, as well as manufacturers, the opportunity to collaborate with each other in a bid to create an enormous, worldwide selection of branded merchandise, for an efficient and more secure market. With Merch collab, licensing is easier than ever before, allowing a synergy between brands and small business owners, to meet the demands of potential clients.

Basically, what this means is that, as a designer, with Merch Collab by Amazon, I can pair up with some of the biggest brands in the world and receive permission to legally create and sell T-shirts that are related to these brands. As an umpire in the marketplace, Amazon simply tracks sales of merchandise and pays out royalties.

On the Merch Collab webpage, we can see some available brands, already on this scheme, which includes the likes of Shane Dawson, Annoying Orange, Rick and Morty etc. With Merch Collab, you will receive the go signal to create and market T-shirts related to these brands.

How does it work?

As a seller, I can use Amazon Merch Collab to choose any of the available brands to create T-shirts and upload to Amazon. The brand will then access my design and choose to decline or approve it as they deemed fit. Amazon recommends that the brands login at least once a week to either approve or decline applications. The T-shirts go live for potentials clients to purchase once it has been approved.

Now, it is important to note that Amazon splits royalties between brands and sellers. Brands are entitled to 67% royalties, while the seller gets the remaining 33%.

To cite an example, let’s say I’m selling a Neil Degrasse Tyson branded T-shirt for $50. The brand is entitled to $33.5 while I’m entitled to the remaining $16.5. Obviously, there will be expenses incurred during the production and shipping process and royalties will be split from the profit made after sale.

Potential Increase in sales

Most designers don’t have an established brand in the marketplace and tend to shuffle between one unique idea to another, with the hopes of getting discovered randomly. This can consequently limit your sales, as there is nothing in your brand for potential clients to associate with and are searching for. But the moment you start designing T-shirts that are connected to popular, established brands, your merchandise becomes more visible to potential clients.

For example, if I’m creating branded Rick and Morty T-shirts through Mesh Collab by Amazon, when customers search for Rick and Morty T-shirts, my product’s are going to be high up in the search results, which increases my chances of making more shirt sales.

Ability to charge higher

Another cool benefit of enrolling for Mesh Collab by Amazon is the ability to charge customers higher for shirt purchases than if you were making your own. The reason is that a lot of people are die-hard fans.  Because they feel extremely passionate towards these brands, they are usually willing to pay a good amount of money to get their hands on anything related to it.

What this means is if I can sell my personal branded shirts for $30, I can charge higher for branded ones. If I decide to sell Neil Degrasse Tyson shirts, I can set the price to about $50 and still make a lot of sales.

No legal problems

This happens to be one of the most exciting benefits of enrolling in this scheme. Being a member of this program takes away the worry of breaking copyright laws which a lot of sellers deal with from time to time. Some are even facing serious consequences which are likely to cause a huge damage to their businesses.

With Mesh Collab by Amazon, you have the green light to create and sell T-shirts by top brands, as you please.
